Theresa Sherkat lives in Melbourne, Australia where she creates beautiful special occasion treats for her business The Bride & Stork Cake Designs.
I first fell in love with Theresa's enchanting pastel creations when she took the Beautify Your Instagram online course and - again! - when she enrolled on Photography for Beginners in April.
It has been a joy to watch Theresa's Instagram feed transform over the past few months. Now I can't wait to share her images because I know they are going to make you crave her whimsical, super on-trend sweets as much as we do! Theresa has had a true Makelight makeover, so take a look below and discover just how she's done it.
Can you tell me a bit about your company which, by the way, has the cutest name?
I run a registered cake business from my home called The Bride & Stork Cake Designs. I make and decorate all of my cakes, cookies and cupcakes and other sweet treats. My love for cake making started about three years ago when I began making my own kids cakes and all of my friends and family encouraged me to start up a business.
My motivation is seeing the look on a little kid's face when he or she sees their cake for the first time. It's priceless and something that makes you feel like a million dollars.
How are you using Instagram to promote Bride & Stork?
I used to only use Instagram to post photographs of my finished cakes. I would post randomly, not regularly. After taking Emily's Beautify Your Instagram Course I realised how powerful a tool Instagram could be, and I have been posting everyday since. This has allowed me to be more varied and creative with my photography and I'm really enjoying using Instagram and connecting with like minded people everyday.
How would you describe your photography style?
I think I'm still finding my style, and I'm sure as time goes by it will develop more. I really love playing with composition and having a cake feature to the left with negative space on the right. Maybe something like that will become a signature shot where people will know that's a Bride & Stork Cake.
So far I've tried to incorporate other things rather than just photos of cake or cookies: a bit of food styling using some ingredients that will be used in my cakes. Trying out some flat lays and taking some floral shots.
Emily's course really opened my mind and helped me to think outside the box and do something different to what my peers are doing.
What does Makelight mean to you?
I stumbled on a Makelight advertisement on Facebook and fell in love with Emily's photographic style and her nature.
It's been wonderful meeting new people all over the world who are unbelievably talented. Not everyone makes cakes, but we all have creativity at the heart. It has been such a positive environment to learn in. I've really loved my time at Makelight.
I just would like to thank Emily and Kathryn for all of their support and encouragement along the way. It really gives me a boost when I see you liking my photos and encourages me to try hard with my work and do something different.
