Makelight Travels : Copenhagen

One thing I wanted to do before I turn 40 in October was to visit Scandinavia. I have been to Stockholm once many years ago but have been dreaming about going back to this area of the world ever since. There is so much of it that I want to see with Stef and our children but for now I thought if I could squeeze in a weekend break that would fill me with Nordic inspiration for a little while longer.

So, last weekend I set off with my Mum for a little adventure in Copenhagen to celebrate being almost 40! I think I fell in love with the city as soon as we climbed off the plane. There is quite literally good design everywhere you look in this city.

I took this brilliant book with me and we squeezed in as much as we could to the weekend while making time for coffee breaks and ice-cream along the way.

We started with a delightful and informative boat tour from Nyhavn, followed by a delicious lunch. We sat outside wrapped in blankets - not the warmest of sunny days but I loved the way that all the cafes and restaurants had blankets on the chairs outside.

If you go to Nyhavn take the one that is cheaper a little further along the canal and save your pennies for buying stationery and other goodies at Hay House. I could have actually moved right in. Next time I'm definitely bringing a bigger suitcase!

Sunday was all about the food market, the Botanic Garden, cafes and exploring more lovely streets of this beautiful, design led city.

I really cannot wait to return again. I want to explore more and go further into Scandinavia too and soak it all up.

This little weekend trip was more than a weekend to celebrate my 40th year. It gave me some space in a different city to think, to quietly plan and to be totally inspired by everything around me.

Wandering around a new place with my camera (even if it's just my iPhone) allows me to be completely in the moment. I often see the world in photographs even if I don't capture them all. And I love to find little details and to really see a city through my viewfinder. It allows me to switch off and really connect with a place.

I hope you have enjoyed this glimpse into Copenhagen through my eyes and that it inspires you to go somewhere new this year with your camera. It doesn't have to be far away. I have places in London that I have never been that I have on my "places to explore" list. I am sure there is somewhere near to you that you could have a little photography adventure in. xo
