Meet the Maker : Wind and Willow Home

Wind and Will Home

Hello lovely readers! I have nearly survived my crazy month of July, so to end it on a happy note I wanted to share one of my favourite Great.ly makers with you, Araya Jensen of Wind and Willow Home.

I think you will love her beautiful products and I thought you might like to know a little more about this talented makers.

Where do you live and work?

I live and work in Eden Prairie, Minnesota (near Minneapolis).

What is special to you about these spaces and how do they influence your work?

We chose our home for it's large back yard among other things.  This has been amazing since we love gardening and the process of growing our own food.  This has influenced my work in many ways: Creating beautiful bowls to serve fresh garden salads in, even larger bowls to store ripening fruit and veggies.

I also have mini planters in my line.  These are extremely tiny but are perfect for planting tiny plants and putting them on windowsills year round.  Winters get long in Minnesota and I feel that having plants in every rooms helps make the weather a bit more bearable.

My studio is located in the basement of my home.  This has been amazing so far since I am able to be available for my children, involving them in my work at times and letting them know that they are a part of Wind and Willow Home, so when they see my products in magazines they are just as proud as I am.

What is your maker story?

My professional career started with a dream to create beautiful spaces so I headed to the city to pursue a degree in Interior Design. I began my career in various retail showrooms in areas such as lighting design, tile and stone, custom furniture, cabinetry and finally found my niche in the Kitchen and Bathroom Design/remodeling industry. After having a successful career over 12 years, I was laid off due to the housing market crash. Jobless, 7 months pregnant with my 2nd child and lots of confusion, it seems that fate had another plan for me. I started creating these simple yet modern housewares as gifts. Soon after, I starting to sell them online I began getting international wholesale requests.  From then I just kept saying Yes to product requests and the business has grown beyond my wildest dreams over the past 2 1/2 years.

What is your favourite product that you sell?

This is a hard question because I love all of the products that I sell.  Many of my ideas for products come out of my own necessity.  I get really excited about each new product and it seems that the newest become my favorite.  I have been in such a planting mood so these small planters are my current favorites.

Where do you get inspiration from?

I get a lot of my inspiration from nature.  My family and I love going on adventure road trips to new state parks and forests.  We enjoy getting outside in all seasons, discovering all the beauty that mother nature has to offer.

How does social media and Great.ly influence your work as a maker?

I believe social media and Great.ly influence my work in so many ways because:

1. I the amazing talent of the all of the Great.ly makers makes me want to continue to strive to do more with my products and brand.

2. There are so many taste makers that I have followed over the years, getting to know their personalities, style and talent.  Being able to get my products in front of them and having them add my products to their shops is thrilling.  It's kind of like getting a pat on the back from a friend.

Thank you so much Araya! Here are the lovely Wind and Willow Home products that I sell in the Makelight Great.ly Boutique. My favourite are the cute Cheers Mini Bowls!
